Christmas Stockings - what does yours look like?

The Christmas stocking has a charming history that blends folklore, tradition, and a bit of whimsy. Its origins can be traced back to various European customs, particularly in England and the Netherlands.

One popular legend involves St. Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop known for his generosity. According to the story, he secretly dropped gold coins down the chimney of a poor family's home. The coins landed in the stockings that were hung by the fireplace to dry. This act of kindness inspired the tradition of filling stockings with gifts.

In the 19th century, the custom gained popularity, especially in Victorian England, where it became common for children to hang stockings by the fireplace on Christmas Eve, eagerly awaiting small gifts and treats from St. Nicholas or Santa Claus.

Today, Christmas stockings can be elaborate or simple, often personalized and filled with small presents, candies, and other goodies, making them a beloved part of Christmas celebrations and traditions around the globe.

It was sweet to learn more about the history behind the Christmas stocking tradition and as former children (!) and now mothers to our own children, we began reminiscing about our own childhood Christmas stocking traditions, and those we have started with our own families.

Fritha, our Director of The Ethical Silk Company in Europe, didn't have a Christmas stocking as a kid but her parents put a pillowcase at the bottom of her bed. This is something that Margaret, our Director of The Ethical Silk Company in the UK (we are so international!) used with her son. It's actually a gorgeous red pillowcase with a drawstring with his name embroidered on it, and is now a well loved keepsake - he is 24! These keepsakes from Christmases gone by often become a tradition in their own right, as we delve through our decorations each year, that bring back so many memories.

There are SO many versions of the Christmas stocking out there. From rugby and football socks to wellington boots and sacks of all shapes and sizes. Of course, let's not forget that Christmas stockings (whatever form yours takes) isn't just for the kids. Many an adult can barely sleep at night with the anticipation of what's in theirs, and of course, what about our pets? It is so cute pulling together a little stocking for your pampered four legged friend, if they have been good of course!

Whether you have been naughty or nice this year, we hope all your dreams come true this Christmas.

With love from us all at The Ethical Silk Company
